Tomlinscote School

Tomlinscote is a vibrant and highly successful secondary school with a strong ethos of independent learning

Inspired Learning

Tomlinscote had a clear vision for their secondary school. They were searching for an innovative teaching experience that was exciting and unique for students. The schools Executive Principal, Ian Hylan, explains “I wanted something that would improve learning and had an opportunity to do something special.” iPad was the answer.

We’ve worked with Tomlinscote since the very beginning of their journey with iPad and are delighted with the success they have achieved.

Tomlinscote is now an Apple Distinguished School with an innovative approach to learning that is helping their students prepare for the future. Apple defines Apple Distinguished Schools as “centres of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrates our vision of exemplary learning environments”.

With the iPad as an integral part of the curriculum it is undeniably creating independent and engaged learners. Tomlinscote school continues to be an inspiring example. Ian Hylan has seen “lots of children making great progress” and is confident this successful deployment is preparing them for the digital age and raising standards of academic achievement.

Why iPad?

iPad is a powerful learning tool. Mark Morren, E-Learning Co-ordinator has seen how iPad has ignited excitement in students and teachers alike as he often hears them say “Wow, I didn’t know it could do that.”

iPad is in use across the curriculum. For instance, recording activities in P.E. lessons with iPad has proven to be an excellent feedback tool for students to analyse their form and technique using apps such as Camera and Coach’s Eye.

In the classroom apps like Kahoot! are used to engage students with interactive quizzes, which gives the whole class an interactive way to demonstrate their understanding of a topic. iPad has enabled a greater collaboration between teachers and students, so that work can be easily shared and annotated for faster feedback.

Coaching and Mentoring for Success

The school’s Principal highlights the tailored training the school received from Apple Professional Learning Specialists from Albion, which has helped teachers confidently deliver an enhanced learning experience with iPad.

To ensure that technology was properly embedded across the curriculum, Albion supported Tomlinscote with their unique Coaching and Mentoring for Success programme (CMFS).

CMFS is a sustainable training programme lead by our Apple Professional Learning Specialists. Our specialist trainers work with key school teachers to develop a sustainable training plan, expand faculty knowledge and ensure the project is pedagogically sustainable. Mark Morren comments that CMFS has enabled them to “constantly build on the skills of our staff”.

Provision and enable

The Albion Learn 1:1 programme provides the school with a financially sustainable solution. Parents are able to contribute monthly and this gives every student an iPad and protective case.

Parents feel it’s affordable and would recommend other schools to follow Tomlinscote with the scheme because it gives schools “a lot more independence and flexibility,” says one parent.

Kevin Delaney, ICT Systems Manager summarises by explaining that “working with Albion is easy. I need a company I can rely on and help me with all facets. It’s a one stop shop, which is most valuable.”
