Albion

RGS The Grange

Situated on a beautiful 50-acre site on the outskirts of Worcester, Albion has worked with RGS The Grange Prep School for over 8 years now, creating an innovative learning culture through the power of iPads.

An Apple distinguished school (like their sister school)

Having worked with the Royal Grammar School family before (check out our other customer story here), Albion has already seen the successes of implementing Apple in Education. RGS The Grange is a leading prep school for ages 2-11, championing both learning excellence and outstanding independent education. In that 8-year partnership, RGS The Grange has been an Apple distinguished school in the last 5. Rated by ISI inspectors as “Excellent in all areas” they have emerged as a global exemplar for utilising iPad in supporting the enhancement of teaching and learning.

The vision behind using iPad

The vision behind working with Albion was to bring in technology that would best achieve pupil outcomes. After considering alternative products, RGS The Grange found iPad’s flexibility, app usage, and great camera the right fit for their school. Albion worked closely with the school to build a package that suited them, holding their hands throughout the entire journey.

“This is not a gimmick, this is about what educational advantage are we going to gain by using this tool, and Albion have been excellent in terms of working with us along that journey”

– Gareth Hughes, Head Teacher, RGS The Grange

How does it work in the classroom?

Ipad is used extensively within their digital learning programme, working closely alongside traditional teaching methods to create a blended approach. The Showbie app is used across the whole school which provides access to resources in lessons, the ability for students to share screens and ‘magpie’ ideas, as well as setting up a student-teacher messaging system.

“It brings that fun element but also extends those experiences for them”

– Marie Egginton, Head of Pre-Prep, RGS The Grange

Marking work has been revolutionised from a teaching perspective. With iPads’ marking-in-the-moment capabilities, The Grange teachers can give faster feedback without having to wait until the end of lessons to see their students work.

The need for photocopying has been greatly reduced (as has the printing budget) which has granted the teachers more time to focus on their students and lessons rather than manual admin tasks.

Ipad has drastically changed the learning outcomes and culture within the school. Being far more interactive than a piece of paper, the staff are now prepared to take more risks in their lesson plans. The Grange saw the importance of investing in sustained teaching development and so 100% of all teachers and teaching assistants are Apple Teachers, making them comfortable in using the Apple technology to its full potential.

“Pupils are at the heart of their learning, making choices…that make them really excited about what they’re learning”

– Matthew Warne, Head of Computing and Digital Learning, RGS The Grange

What do the kids think?

Perhaps the most important perspective of all of this is that of the pupils. Ipad has helped the students see more detail in their learning, giving them a fresh perspective on the curriculum. It has become easier to go back and look at their work, and the work of others, and overall has made the learning experience more enjoyable.

“If you took the iPad away it would be terrible and learning wouldn’t be so much fun”

– Pupil, RGS The Grange

It has been an immense privilege to work with RGS The Grange over the last decade or so. They are an incredibly self-reflective school, so when working with Albion, they wanted to make changes that would truly make a difference in their student’s lives. It was their progressive mindset that set the foundations for an ongoing culture of innovation and we look forward to continuing working alongside them.
